Urbanities
URBANITIES
Urbanities consists of diptychs offering an alternative take on street photography and the figure of the photographic flâneur. In contrast to the anthropocentric and humanistic nature of the genre in its classic version, the metropolis of Urbanities is deliberately depopulated and rooted in material objects, textures, signage, detritus and other elements that decorate or “contaminate” the urban environment. When humans appear, they are generally simulacra—photographic, drawn or painted representations on posters, billboards and other promotional material. Although the photos derive from excursions through the center and around the periphery of Madrid, this is not an essay on local colour or customs but rather an attempt to lend form and rhythm to a personal experience of the metropolis.
