AI image-generation tools have potentiated the figure of the prompter, whose task consists in producing a natural-language text—a description—that generates a realised version of an internal mental picture: that which is seen “in the mind’s eye”. This procedure mimics the vision of a certain kind of painter or the visual recall of a particular memory rather than the “indexical” captures of the traditional photographer.
In the present body of work I have gone against the grain of the “mind’s eye” style of prompting and employed brief formulations—oblique, humorous, cryptic, poetic, absurd, obscene, polysemic—to generate pseudo-photographic images that aim to provoke maximum surprise—a surprise often derived from bypassing or subverting the underlying constraints of the AI platform by “pranking” it and forcing it to throw up seemingly random “hallucinations”.
In other words, at the moment of launching the prompt, I did so without any pre-existing image in my mind to which the result might conform. The “surreal” nature of the results derives from the way in which the brevity of the prompts is interpreted by the image generator.
